As a digital native, I have been typing up assignments on Microsoft Word or Google docs for as long as I can remember. I personally prefer Google docs because I have been using it since I was in high school. It was easier for me to keep all my school documents in my Google drive. This was before Microsoft had made a place to keep files all stored together.
I thought it was interesting that there was an international standard for educators on technology. The standard that is most meaningful to me is the collaborator. The collaborator is one who uses their peers around them and communicates with others to constantly improve. I think that constant improvement is what makes technology so useful and to use it best is to collaborate with others.
I agree with the label digital native. Gen Z has never know what it was like to not have technology or be plugged into the digital world. The time when I noticed the biggest difference between me and a digital immigrant was when I was in elementary school. They would always be so slow when they were using technology which is almost opposite the point. They were so far behind that they preferred to not even use new technology because it was too hard to catch up. I anticipate that it will be similar when I am teaching the next generation. I might prefer to use the technology that I am familiar with over the new fancy tech.
Hello Lindsey!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about technology, there were so many times that someone not so familiar with technology was doing something and It was weird to know i knew something more than them even though our age is vastly different. The world is speeding up and up and it will be interesting to see how digital immigrants and natives handle the evolution!
Hi, Lindsey!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree that technology is really all we have ever known. As a digital native, myself, I can attest to your claim that Gen Z has been "plugged" into this technology-based world from the very beginning. It is interesting because I have been familiar with Microsoft Word (and other softwares) since I was in elementary school. Yet, many of my instructors have told me that when they were my age, they did not have access to the plethora of devices we have today. How the times have changed!

ReplyDeleteHi Lindsey! I am apart of Gen Z as well. I definitely think it depends on the environment a person is in. Although, I was born during a time where technology is popular, I did not always have access to technology. Therefore, I use a lot of technology but at times I tend to find myself pulling away from technology instead of leaning towards it. However, I think that you makes really good points in your blog.
ReplyDeleteHey Lindsey. I get what you mean about liking Google Drive more because that's what you're used to, that's exactly how I feel about MS Word. And it's funny what you said about how teachers would take such a long time to figure out the technology that it would actually become counterproductive in the class. I'm definitely a bit nervous about the future tech that we will be behind on as educators.
